@rachelcruze: A full ride sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s not always that simple. If their heart isn’t in it, there are other ways to go to college without going into debt. #college #studentloans #scholarships @Dr. John Delony
As a former student athlete, I would not do it unless he really wants to. It was HARD. And really it’s a full time plus job

You have to 1000% eat, sleep, and breathe your sport to play it at the collegiate level. If you don’t it’s not gonna work

This is great advise. I played D1 baseball and was on fire for it. College sports demands 100% of your time and if you’re not all in then it makes the whole experience miserable.

As a Sport Psych coach, I completely agree. Forcing an athlete to spend four years in a miserable situation he does not want to be in is not a great idea. The psychological impacts would be worse than financial debt.

My son got an offer for football. His decision and he did not want to play in college. He has no regrets.

He has to want to do it! He is doing the work! If he doesn’t want to do it, it’s not worth it!

College sports is not for the faint of heart…you have to WANT it because it’s HARD!

I was a full ride college athlete and loved it, but it was hard. There are certain majors you just can’t do. And the wear and tear on your body is real.

My daughter D1 athlete. It’s a GRIND. I thought I knew but I didn’t. If heart not in it now it won’t be later. Good advice!

Absolutely…you can catch up on education/finance much faster than mental health….MH can take a lifetime.

Not at all how I thought the answer would go but after listening to it explained I’d have to agree. We can’t make our kids play sports when they no longer enjoy them.

On a completely different note, we offered to pay four years of college for our son if he went to community college for two years and then two years to fulfill his degree. He had his mindset on a specific college and we offered to pay one year only because it was expensive. And it was THE best experience ever for him. He’s paying off the rest of the loans and he is now going on to a doctorate. Let them choose what makes them happy. It does work out.
