@oldloserinbrooklyn: Are nostalgic and referential marketing all we have. So long as the world is on a doom spiral innovation will continue taking a backseat. no one wants to take a financial risk on something new and it’s so frustrating

Isn’t it ironic… that if nostalgia is indeed the defining trend of the 2020s, the greatest “innovation” we created in this decade so far is AI, which is a tool that can’t create anything, but only create variations and references of things we already created? Just a thought… it’s gonna get a lot worse for creativity everywhere

There’s a book about this. It’s called Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher. He talks about reboots, franchises, no new trends, and nostalgia as capitalist risk mitigation.

Movies are dictated by investors, and investors only want to fund ideas that will yield a return. Same with fashion.

I am OVER nostalgia. I want new, different, and creative. I feel like all this nostalgia is just capitalism sucking everything dry for its last dollar.

i think about this allll the time. the insane amount of remakes of shows/movies, the amount of archive pieces on red carpets. it’s never ending. and it’s been like this since like 2020. i’ve been saying this decade will be known for absolutely nothing (other than the pandemic)

It’s also disappointing because the regurgitated versions are always inferior. So it’s not new AND it’s worse quality

Well said. The constant reboots of old shows are such a telltale sign of recycled nostalgia, too. Like what will we be nostalgic for in 20 years from this era..?!

I’m tired of seeing 90s bags reborn. They’re not reborn. They’re exactly the same, only 10 x the price.

A lot of brands are clearly too scared to take risks or create something new - probably because they have the pressure to focus on making money.. so just stick to making what has worked in the past. Can see this in a lot of industries not just fashion tbh.

everything feels dismal and is so poorly made. I totally get why there's a resurgence in nostalgic fashion, toys, games and art.

Decades like the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and the early and mid Y2K really rolled out original creative ideas and directions and it was ahead and thrived in those decades, which also fitted the cultural zeitgeist of the time. But I blame mass consumerism and capital greed for annihilating original creative ideas because they don’t want to take the risk, which itself is a lazy excuse. And everything is treated like a weekly viral trend, nothing is allowed to marinate anymore.

I think you’re right bc why are they remaking Harry Potter. They can’t even change much bc of the existing merch/parks/nostalgia/etc. So I doubt it’ll be more than a copy.
