Arashiyama Bamboo Grove looks magical on Instagram. In reality, it's a 200-meter path packed with thousands of tourists. You won't get a single clean photo unless you show up at 5am. Most people leave disappointed. Osaka Castle is beautiful from the outside — and it's free to enjoy the park. But the inside is a reconstructed concrete museum with elevators and modern glass displays. Save your ¥600 and admire it from the gardens instead. Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku is still showing up in travel blogs, but it's either permanently closed or turned into a forgettable show. The TikTok videos are years old. Don't plan your evening around it. TeamLab Planets is visually stunning but costs ¥3,500 and you'll queue at every single room. The crowds destroy the experience. If you want the same vibe without the chaos, try TeamLab Botanical Garden in Osaka — it's outdoor and way quieter. One thing that almost ruined my trip: my eSIM. Popular brands like Airalo or Holafly route through foreign servers, so TikTok and banking apps stop working in Japan. I switched to a Japan-only eSIM on a local network — problem solved. Check PlanJapon if you want one that actually works. Maid cafés sound fun but most Western tourists leave feeling awkward. If you're into anime culture, hit the arcades in Akihabara or themed izakayas instead. The real rule? 2-3 activities a day, max.
