Been a nurse since 2003 and see zero problem with a patient snuggling with their so. Being in the hospital is traumatic at any age, why deny a simple comfort?

(Nurse for 15 yrs) Rules for Visitors: 1. If the nurse is in another patient’s room, DO NOT go into another patient’s room to get the nurse, ask her a question, etc. etc. Use the call bell. Someone will get your nurse. 2. If the room does not have its own full bathroom with a closing door, DO NOT use the patient’s potty chair, urinal, pull out toilet, etc. Ask for the closest bathroom and we will direct you. 3. If the visitor themselves need assistance walking, TOILETING, etc. DO NOT assume the patient’s nurse will also help you in the bathroom, or wheel you down to the cafeteria to get lunch, etc.

So my husband is getting chemo right now. 5 days in a row for 6-7 hours at a time. He wanted me to climb into bed and snuggle with him on the last day this week because he was feeling shitty. I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate or not, but also…if it brings him any amount of comfort and we aren’t doing weird stuff, why does it matter?

If my spouse or child is dying in the hospital, I can lay in the bed with them if I want to. Unless there’s a specific rule posted in the bedroom about it. Thank you.

I’m an advanced practice nurse of over 25 years now and I am constantly educating new nurses to a concept that was drilled into our heads years ago “As a nurse, you DO NOT have a right to bring your personal opinions or pet peeves to work”. Plain and simple but a concept that isn’t taught anymore. All these “rules” of yours are nothing more than your opinion and whether I or anyone else agrees is irrelevant bc your personal opinions have no place in your job. These might be opportunities for education rather than rules to follow. The danger is when we set these types of rules/ opinions in place we subconsciously or more often consciously treat patients in a manner that is perceived as judgement. We are supposed to be the patients advocate, often the only advocate a patient will have so building a trusting rapport is our top priority. So maybe let your pet peeves go and focus more on how you can effectively & therapeutically interact with your patients so both your needs are met. I know in my 25+ yrs I’ve had many an uncomfortable conversation with my patients and in a manner that built trust, not destroy it. Also.. getting into bed with someone .. there are numerous reasons people do this and if it’s fulfilling a mental/ emotional need for the patient then that is far more important than you being uncomfortable. Not to mention if you are a parent and it’s your child in patient.. you have every right to comfort them where they are.

Unless any of this is actual hospital policy (minus number 3), check your opinions at the time clock. Respectfully that is..

Don’t use the bathroom in front of staff if you’re not the patient.

I just got home from a 9 day stay in the hospital. My significant other and I cuddled in the bed some of the time never crossed my mind that it would be a problem 🤷

I snuggled with my grandma when we was sick and dying. Not sure why that would put you in a bad position. We are living on our loved ones for the last times

Okay but listen if the patient is a pediatric patient and they want a parent to sit with them or lay with them in bed, that’s also an except here

I’m not hating you for #2 but if they’re behaved I disagree! I brought my daughter to visit my grandparents in the hospital and it always made them happy we brought coloring books and crayons and they l colored together and chatted lol.

#3 is the only rule I agree with you. I worked healthcare for 25 years and witnessed many spouses and children cuddling their loved one. Kids should visit in hospitals to understand what’s happening to their parent or grandparent.

I was in the hospital for 12 weeks. The only time I felt normal was when my husband and kids came to see me. They all often got in bed with me. Seeing them kept me going. I respectfully disagree.
