Try compressing your clay before cutting it into strips, they’ll be denser and hopefully more plastic and durable!

I'd also work with it when it's leather hard and use a wood instead of a cardboard box bc it lets the clay breathe as it dries and is firm enough to stop warping in the future

Hi, a great tip is to wet a linen fabric and place it on the part that you’re not working on, so it doesn’t dry out on you.
