Didn’t Lisa Kudrow’s actual twin sister not play that character?

I'd say it's perfectly plausible that the couple just walked away. It would have distracting if they were still in the shot.

it seems like you're suggesting that 2001 was a technological dark age 😅 we had the matrix in 1999

I feel like today we’d probably have to keep the couple in frame for continuity. Which does make me wonder why we overthink stuff soooo much nowdays

Motion control using multiple passes has been use since the seventies, cool use though 😬

Wait until this guy learns they were using motion control cameras in the 70s. Star Wars (1977) is the earliest best known use of motion control. It wasn’t new or innovative in the 90s to get one shot in Friends.

You need to checkout Kylie Minogue’s music clip video for “ Come into my World “ groundbreaking for its time

in the big bang theory episode where they have the time machine with the big spinning back, you can see the cast member crouching behind it to do the spinning due to the widescreen change

Yeah they did this in 1989 with BTTF 2 as well. In fact that’s when it was invented…

Interesting to see the breakdown! Red Dwarf is a UK sitcom that started in 1988 and was frequently low on budget and time because they used vfx like this where other sitcoms of its time did not.

Robert Zemeckis used this method with the Vista guide system in BTTF2. It was ground breaking

There’s another episode or scene where Ursula hands Phoebe something with both of them in the same frame and it looks so seamless.

The funniest thing about Friends going to wide screen is that you see stand ins who were cut off in the old format. 😆

Rotoscoping in Friends is wild… like finding out that the bar in Cheers was a green screen or that Seinfelds apartment was actually a volume 😂

I always thought it was the actor playing both parts and then splicing the shots together.

There would likely be three elements (passes) used. One for the left, one for the right, and then a “clean” that could be used where needed. And yes, one of the more difficult aspects when filming is keeping the actor from walking into their space of the other pass. Also we would use a standin for each pass that would provide the lines and eyeline for the main actor to interact with, later to be replaced by the main actor. These shots take time to set up and time to get right and many shows are more put off by the time needed than the cost.
