J cuts are better for general use. L cuts are better for things like documentaries, highlighting moments in an interview, grandiose storytelling/narration. I feel like L cuts work best when going into b-roll while J cuts are like a commentary/podcast. You can variate this, but it will generally feel jarring because of what I mentioned.
