I don't think it was ever truly about her daughter being in another seat. She was using that card so she could aisle seat and the kid would get her middle seat. it was all to get out of the middle.

This is so stressful tho. When as a parent you pay to be sitting next to your kid, and you check-in and the agents are like “just ask someone on the plane.” Also as a rule follower, I have to sit in my assigned seat 😭
