I think your hair was too dry so the ends fell flat instead of holding the curl. Maybe try sectioning differently as well. And I agree with using some sort of curl defining brush, maybe to get curl clumps and maybe just finger coil the curls that need a little extra help.

From my 2c-3a hair experience finger coiling does not really work with wavy/curly hair. It is good for these 3c+ hair

Finer curl on soaking wet hair with a healthy amount of curl cream and mousse in your hair and then scrunch after!

girly! we have the same hair! less is more. only brush your hair in the shower and then leave it alone, no finger coiling. use a tiny bit of leave in and use a good amount of mousse and a little bit of gel!

i use a denman brush to just spiral my hair around it & it’s so much faster!! I have heat damage on the bottom 2-3 inches so I have to help it out & it holds for days!
