this is called the veneration of the cross it shows reverence and respect to the suffering and crucifixion of Christ. that cross is not taking the place of God but it reminds every catholic that we were redeemed at a greater price the death of the son of God.

On Good Friday, Catholic churches are very quiet and serious. The service focuses on a wooden cross. Long ago, crosses were used to punish people, but for Christians, the cross is now a symbol of love and victory. This part of the service is called the Veneration of the Cross. The ceremony works like this: The Procession: A wooden cross is carried through the church. The Connection: People leave their seats and walk toward it. They aren't praying to the wood itself. Instead, the cross acts like a bridge to help them feel closer to Jesus. It is similar to kissing a photo of someone you love; you aren't showing love to the paper, but to the person in the picture. The Gestures: When people reach the cross, they show respect in personal ways. Some kneel, some touch the wood, and many kiss it. These actions are a physical way of saying "thank you" for Jesus' sacrifice. Good Friday is the only day of the year focused entirely on the suffering of Jesus. Having a real cross to see and touch makes the story feel more personal. It helps people move past just thinking about the story and allows them to feel it in their hearts. Even though the day is sad, the ritual brings a sense of hope. It reminds people that the pain of the cross is what leads to the happiness of Easter Sunday.
