Could you make a video ranking the top 3 or 5 philosophies you believe are the most beneficial for the average everyday person? I know it is impossible for 1 philosophy to work for everyone, but for the sake of entertainment, which ones do you think are the best?

Hi!! I’ve looked at your account for a few book recs, and as i’ve recently won some money i want to buy a book, but i’m not sure if one exists or if you have any recommendations. I consider myself a leftist, and i research things about communism and whatnot, but everything seems biased. Do you know of any books that break down all, or some, of the political ideologies?

You succinctly articulated the very basic essentials differentiating between science and religion. Great post! You made me think. Thanks for all of your thoughtful videos.

hmm. We can't take the defintion of religion as "private" for granted though. That's a result of the Reformation. Check out the new textbook, Seeing through Religion (OUP)

I would say it depends on your religion and your interpretation of it. If you're a YEC, then yes, your religion is in conflict with science. If you believe Genesis 1-11 didn't literally happen, then no, your religion is not in conflict with science. Also, you said that religious belief is "true" because of "what it can do for a believer." However, I don't think that's true. It's an almost infantalizing notion of religion. Religions are an attempt to explain reality. Thus, we should treat them as explanations, evaluating them as such. I don't see how my notion would be displeasing to any religious believer.

They don’t inherently contradict - at their core, they try to explain different things. It’s when religion tries to make claims about what happened in/to the real world that they contradict, and it’s clear which one is in the wrong. Examples include Genesis 1, the story of Noah’s Ark, the Resurrection, Jesus’ Miracles, etc

I agree with this to a certain degree. As you correctly stated, Religion helps a person individually and they need not justify any truths to their belief. The conflict occurs when religious people push back on truth BECAUSE of their belief and it becomes toxic to society. Eg pushing anti homosexual rhetoric (even though science shows it’s natural) causes real and measurable harm to society. Promoting science denial in congregations also causes real and measurable harm. Eg. Almost all climate change deniers are Christian, which flows through to legislation. These are just two of many examples where religion conflicts with science
