I wanted Victoria Pedretti in the whole series. She’s mesmerizing.

Couldn’t fathom why she wouldn’t say to Jude ‘Don’t ever get married, just fall in love and live your life and tell your children they never have to marry’ so that she could end the cycle of the curse?? Instead she was like ‘be picky x’…girl did you not just see the GoT-level red wedding that took place?? Let’s have babies out of wedlock from now on

I cannot agree with you there. I think the curse and everything that comes after it was the best part of the show. I liked the subversion of expectations where you initially believe the family will be the antagonist forc but all of it ends up being an interesting subversion and set up for the assisted unaliving plotline that start exploring the themes of ”love as a performance you’re putting on to pretend everything is fine”. From there, the introduction of the curse gives Rachel a sense of agency where things don’t happen TO her like so many horror movies taping into that subject but where SHE’\ the one proactive in that horror. The moment it’s explained to her, she becomes proactive and often is the one to tell others to keep up with her. It’s another interesting flip on that kind of story and help us focus on her internal world where she slowly has to finalle settle down and analyze her relationship where throughout the first half, she wasn’t really given the opportunity for it. The curse serves as a way for her to ask herself if the ML is really the one and tackle the idea of ”how do you know if the person you’ll literally bet your life on is worth it?”. The whole soulmate elixir plotline in ep7 ends up being a metaphor for one kind of answer to that question where one approaches is basically ”don’t think about it and just become a subservient housewife that blindly follow your husband uncritically”. But then, at the last second, she makes the character decision of not going through with it and take a different path. Still charging in blindly and putting her whole faith in him but out of her own volition and not because she HAS to. And that’s what pushes the final conflict where the ML just straight up cannot commit that same level of faith in her. It then unravels into the very bad thing that’s supposed to happen where the curse puts light on the entire lie of their relationship (and every the brief side characters who also exhibited fakeness in their relationship). And during that moment of enlightenment, Rachel makes the worst realization you can have in a relationship. [1/2 sorry for the long ahh comment lol]

I don’t love that the rich seemingly sinister family had nothing to do with the curse idk I thought they were going to be more involved

Girrrl i binged this in one night. Once they revealed the curse in ep 4 I got genuinely pissed off. The reveal, in my opinion, killed the scare factor for me. And I agree. I’m not sure what it was trying to say especially when one of the most toxic couples end up living at the end and it kinda indicates that they are soulmates but .. what does that mean? - I had a good time with the entire show but what it ended up being in the end let me down I think

I think it would be perfect if it was 6 episodes instead of 8 to keep it exciting! Other than that, I enjoyed it very much, and the lead actress was so good

I thought it was going a Midsomer / Get Out direction and as soon as that turned into the curse I got disappointed in the storyline. Red herrings are one thing but they had no legit explanation for why the whole family was weird af to her from the get go, the whispering behind her back etc

It definitely abandons the tone and themes it originally started with as soon as you hit episode 3 or 4 which I was disappointed in because that’s what got me immediately hooked. I guess the reasoning was because the show wanted us to feel her dread and her feeling of something very bad was going to happen so it was kind of like we were being paranoid like she did. I wish they stuck with that because as soon as you realize what’s going on and the reveal of what’s happening there’s not much left to imagination. I felt like they could have done better keeping us invested like they did with the first 3 episodes. I still loved it and recommend it.

100% agree on the fact that it abandoned the creep halfway through. The curse explained her dread completely, and then trying to solve the mystery made it so much less scary and surreal.

totally agree, i was so hooked the first few episodes by the surreal vibe and had so many theories of what i thought was going to happen, and the latter half of the season just did not live up to my expectations

thats so interesting that you feel that way about the ending. like for me it was the perfect closure and narrative arc. for me the idea that when she finally made a decision to walk away and leave this uncaring family to their fate was also the moment she got manipulated and dragged back in. like Nicky was willing to follow his mom, follow his family at the expense of rachel. so even tho she had her big moment of rejecting him, in real life right he is the rich powerful family man and she would have suffered the consequence of that. idk I really liked this show

The beginning is great because you're experiencing the anxiety with Rachel which makes you feel closer to her as the protagonist

The first 2 episodes had me FULL of dread. It was so effective. I had very similar gripes as the series went along. I would still recommend it, but it did have flaws. So so hard to see horror stick a clean landing but I enjoyed the ride. BN Cherry Flavor is a favorite of mine, too! 🍒

I 100% agree that there were too many subgenre horror tropes into one show and the ones that were cool got dropped and it got significantly less scary as it was going on

I felt like it was creepy for the sake of being creepy, no depth to things at all, first episode is very reminiscent of I’m thinking of ending things but I felt very frustrated because Flanagan has set a precedent of horror with intention

I loved this show. I think you bring up some good points, but I still loved it. I thought it was so refreshing to see a main character like Rachel who is so smart and self aware and normal.
