September 17 will never just be another day on the calendar. It will always be the day you came into this world. And this year, for the first time, I have to celebrate it without you in it. I don’t really know how to explain what that feels like. There are days I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you’re gone. There are moments I still want to call you, tell you something, ask you something, hear your voice, or just know that you’re there. My heart breaks for you every single day. But today feels different. Today I don’t want to only think about losing you. I want to think about the life you lived. The people you loved. The Christmases you made magical. The memories you created without even realizing they would someday become some of the most precious things we have left. You left fingerprints everywhere, Mom. On your kids. On your grandkids. On your family. On your friends. On every person who was lucky enough to be loved by you. And those fingerprints didn’t disappear when you did. They’re still here. You’re still here in so many of the things we say, the things we do, the traditions we carry on, the stories we tell, and the pieces of you we see in each other. I would give anything to celebrate one more birthday with you. One more hug. One more laugh. One more “Happy Birthday, Mom.” So wherever you are today, I hope somehow you know how loved you still are. How missed you are. And how incredibly grateful I am that out of every person in this world, I got to call you my mom. Happy heavenly birthday, Mom. I love you more than I could ever put into words. September 17, 1956. Forever your day. 🤍
