That’s true for the humanities. It depends on the field. If you are going for a STEM PhD program like mathematics, I swear by the balls of Zeus you better be highly intelligent!! That’s the baseline, then endurance.

100% agree. I got my PhD in 96. my belief is that the difference between those who are ABD (all but dissertation) and those who finish their PhD is perseverance.

This is as true as it gets. And there is this misconception that your PhD will follow this nice linear progression and that is just not the reality at all and you have to be able to overcome that.

I learned more about stats during my PhD research and analysis than I did in all my stats classes. So, if a measure of intelligence is the ability to teach yourself, then that’s a consideration.

i agree 100%! being in a PhD program has actually made me realize how much I don’t know but it’s def a test of discipline and endurance. as long as you continue to be a curious learner and keep exploring info for your questions you can do well.

I am wondering if the entrance criteria will change for PhD (and really all graduate) programs as schools become more financially reliant on matriculation numbers and cheap graduate student labor. I have noticed in music programs a consistent decline of graduate requirements and standards to accommodate student retention and expediency of graduation timeline. The alternative is that schools could accept students who they are less certain will be able to complete the program.
