44+ families in Coopers Pen, Trelawny have been displaced after their homes were demolished in the middle of the night, leaving families with little to nothing and nowhere to go. And the Jamaican government cannot simply distance itself from what happened. Police were reportedly present during the operation, men from the community were detained and families were left to watch their homes and belongings be destroyed. When state resources are involved in an operation that leaves Jamaican citizens homeless, the government has questions to answer. These are not just buildings. These were people’s homes, filled with their belongings, memories and entire lives. Mothers, children, elderly and disabled residents are now dealing with the aftermath, with families reportedly living in tents beside the remains of the community they once called home. Jamaicans should not be displaced and left without adequate housing or support while land is cleared for the benefit of foreign investment. Development should NEVER come at the expense of the people who already call Jamaica home. What happened in Coopers Pen deserves attention far beyond Jamaica. Jamaicans at home, across the diaspora and anyone who believes our people should not be treated as disposable must continue to amplify their voices and demand answers, accountability and meaningful support for the families affected. There are protests planned throughout September. If you are in Jamaica and are able to show up, please support the people of Coopers Pen. If you are abroad, SHARE THEIR STORIES. Keep talking about it. Keep the pressure on.
