@steadyrein: one of the reasons i wanted a homestead is to get to the point of being as self-sufficient as possible. growing my own food, raising my own beef, etc. so with that, im hauling one of my open (not pregnant) heifers to the butcher so that i can stock my freezers for a long time. I think its so easy to be entirely disconnected from where our food comes from. i personally feel like if you eat meat; you need to be willing to recognize and appreciate what it takes to get it on your plate. butchering one of my own for the first time is such an honor. for those who asked about my cows: most of my cattle will stay with me for a long time. i breed them and sell the calves, sometimes needing to cull ones that don’t get bred, or that i’m not as keen on keeping in my herd and carrying on genetics from. . . . #homestead #beef #ranchlife #highlandcattle #cattle
So much better than the disassociation of grabbing beef off the grocery store shelves. Knowing where and who it comes from makes you appreciate the privilege of it

the level of care and effort you put Into raising those animals is a level work people dont often see when it comes to ranching/homesteading so its very nice to have you here bridging the gap of that disconnection
