Leslie J Moss :
I always give them a weird or unique hobby and the delve into that hobby. One of my characters is a science teacher and as a kid he loved magic. A teacher showed him the science behind the magic which is how he fell in love with it and why he wanted to teach science.

I love the journal entry idea! For my own characters, I like to go through their pockets. What do they always carry? Are they the type to carry a book? A multi-tool? A knife? Loose change, gum, those 3d printed "fucks" to hand out? I forget which author I poached it off of (might've been Levine?)
