They use to quarry the granite back in the late 1800s and some of the stones went to St Louis to build.

If you would have drove into Ironton (like 5 minutes from the park) you would see a ton of houses and businesses on main street made out of the granite mines from the quarries there! Those quarries have provided Granite for a lot of buildings and headstones over the years! Growing up just minutes from here, you sometimes forget how beautiful it truly is, my good friend and I hiked it last weekend and had the conversation about forgethow lucky we were to grow up here and being able to explore every inch of the park.

family is from there. when we go floating down the Black River at k bridge every year we always go to elephant rocks the day before we leave you should check out the history of fort Davidson and the courthouse in Ironton
