But a sprain is a ligament injury — and ligaments do something muscles don't. They don't move the joint. They restrain it. They're the seatbelts that keep the ankle from going where it shouldn't. . Around 90% of ankle sprains happen the same way: the foot rolls inward, and the ligaments on the outside of the ankle — most often the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular — get stretched or torn. In a more severe sprain, that restraint is partially or fully lost. The joint sits looser than it did before. . Here's the part both patients and clinicians can underweight: the swelling and bruising heal long before the stability does. A ligament that's been overstretched doesn't simply snap back to its original tension. And when mechanical restraint drops, the next awkward step, curb, or cut rolls easier than the last. That's how a single sprain quietly becomes chronic ankle instability. The reason recurrence is so common comes down to a detail that's easy to miss: stability isn't only tissue. It's control. Proprioception — your brain's sense of where the foot is in space — is frequently impaired after a sprain, and it doesn't recover on its own. This is why incomplete rehabilitation, not the original tear, is the most common driver of repeat sprains. Effective recovery restores three things: range of motion, strength, and balance. Bracing, taping, or a compression sleeve can support early return and manage mild swelling, but they don't replace retraining the joint. Treat the first sprain like it matters.
