Naked mole rats almost never get cancer. And the reason why might have something to do with a molecule your body already makes. In this conversation with Dr. Vera Gorbunova and Dr. Andrei Seluanov, they break down one of the more fascinating findings in longevity research: the role of hyaluronic acid. Your body produces it. But the naked mole rat produces a version that's six to ten times longer. That difference in length changes how the tissue behaves — it becomes more elastic, holds water better, and appears to create an environment where cancer simply can't take hold. When they tried to intentionally grow a tumor from naked mole rat cells in a petri dish, they couldn't do it. But the moment they blocked those cells from producing hyaluronic acid, tumor growth became possible. That finding pointed to something bigger. So they engineered a mouse to carry the gene responsible for producing this longer form of hyaluronic acid. The result: less cancer, and a lifespan extended by roughly ten to fifteen percent.
