As a helper, it’s none of my business what happens outside of session. I plant seeds and I hope it blossoms. I wish for the best outcomes but I can’t take it personally.

My therapist literally let me go and stopped my treatment because she said she couldn’t help me anymore… I was 15 and it’s not like I told anything that was disturbing, just bipolar depression, anxiety and ptsd. That rly hurt me for a long time

I do not take ownership of my clients successes or their failures. As a therapist we are only there to walk with the client we do not lead, we do not force.

i mean this in no rudeness at all because therapist are people are obviously deserve to turn it off that’s not what I’m thinking, but everyone in here saying “i’m a helper not a fixer, i can’t do anything but try” and like yeah obviously but then also what do i as a terribly mentally ill person do when there is only this “well you still have to be responsible for your healing” which again-

A therapist can absolutely assist you, but they can’t heal for you. Healing requires your participation. My therapist gave me a feelings wheel, asked thoughtful questions, reflected my blind spots, and created a safe space for me to explore them. But I had to do the work. I had to feel it, process it, reframe it, and apply it to my life. Therapy isn’t someone fixing you. It’s someone helping you learn how to navigate yourself.

Genuine Question: If a patient legitimately does not improve.. after months, years, etc. of hands-on therapy… Literally, what’s next.? Like is all hope just lost for that person?

This is why the reason people go into this field is so important! It’s never about you. I think experience can help you identify what things are actually helpful or if/when a client is actually ready to make changes and when to challenge them. But ultimately, if the client is ready for change but isn’t implementing what they learn, their lack of progress isn’t the clinician’s fault. I think in some contexts it can be our issue as clinicians, but you have to be accountable for that & grow from there!

We want what’s best for our clients. We celebrate their successes in recovery! And when they’re struggling we will give 100% when on the job, and then give them empowerment and independence to make their decisions in their own care. IF we carry it home for all clients, we would t be in the job anymore as we would burn out like a phoenix 🐦‍🔥

I think it speaks to our desire to want to see the best happen for those we see. It certainly does take experience to be able to gain insight and know that it’s not always “us” as the reason a client is not perhaps progressing. And, sometimes we need to tweak our idea of “progress”.

When I was a CNA working at a hospital, it would shatter my heart to see these doctors and nurses trying everything they could to save these patients and none of it working and I tried to leave it at work, but it was way too hard. I ended up quitting after a year.

I miss Ed my old therapist. I never expected the old white dude to help me sort things out in my head and look so happy when he told me "I think we are good here. come back when your brain needs a tune up" and then he retired.

I’m a social worker and it’s been such a learning process for me. My empathy and compassion for the people I serve makes me be good at my job, at and the same time, the trauma I’m exposed constantly needs to be managed. Otherwise it becomes absolutely unsustainable to keep going. It takes work but it’s necessary.
