The Cooper Station, also known as the O’Neill cylinder, is a concept for a massive space habitat designed to allow people to live permanently beyond Earth. The idea was developed by American physicist Gerard O’Neill during the 1970s as a possible way to create large human settlements in space. Unlike a traditional space station, the habitat would be built as a gigantic rotating structure. Its rotation would create artificial gravity, while sunlight would provide the energy and natural illumination needed to support life inside. The proposed design consists of two enormous cylinders rotating in opposite directions. This arrangement would help reduce unwanted gyroscopic effects and allow the station to maintain its orientation in space. Each cylinder was envisioned as being roughly 8 kilometers in diameter and up to 32 kilometers long. Such enormous dimensions would provide enough internal space for residential areas, agriculture, infrastructure and large natural environments. The inner surface of the cylinder would essentially become the ground where people live. The habitat could contain cities, parks, forests, rivers and farmland, creating an artificial environment that resembles a small world of its own. Large mirrors positioned outside the structure would also play an important role. By changing their position, they could direct sunlight into the habitat and control the amount of light reaching different areas. This could be used to create different lengths of daylight and simulate seasonal changes. The main idea behind the O’Neill cylinder was much more ambitious than simply providing astronauts with a place to stay.
