The girl you see is actually the spiritual incarnation of the pipa, passed down from the grandfather’s generation to the grandson’s. Our main character is the grandson of the young man who once helped the old man with the burlap sack - the young man who never made it back to Chang’an, but instead stayed in Hexi, married, had children, and eventually this grandson was born. So in truth, our main character is not originally from Chang’an, but from Hexi, carrying the dream of returning to his ancestral homeland that was passed down from his grandfather. That is why, during the conversation with the girl, the voice of the grandfather and the girl merge into one
