@sumsofanarchyofficial: Okay, let’s have a look at a proof. We can write any multiplication from 6x6 to 10x10 as: (10-A)(10-B) where A and B are just the differences between the numbers and 10. For example, 6x8 would be (10-4)(10-2). Now we can multiply those brackets (we multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second bracket): (10-A)(10-B) =100 - 10B - 10A + AB Now, the first three terms are all multiples of 10, so we can pull that 10 out and see what’s left: =10(10-B-A) + AB But 10-B-A is the same as 10-(B+A) so we’ve got: 10[10-(B+A)] + AB The first bit matches up with counting in tens for the fingers on and below the joining line. We’re essentially subtracting the fingers above the line, which are the differences between our numbers and 10. The AB matches up to the loose fingers we multiply above the line, the differences between our numbers and 10. I wish I had learned multiplication in any other way than by memorising the times table; or even that my teacher had a allowed us to properly memorise it. My dad tried to make me learn it properly (aka learning the whole equation [?, sorry English isn't my native language]), but I got punished by my teacher for trying to learn it that way. Instead we were only allowed to memorise the result of each one and then rattled them down together (e.g. 8, 16 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80)... To this day I can only do multiplications in my head (and none above 10x10) by going through the whole list of which ever one I need till I reach the right one, while simultaneously counting with my fingers to make sure I stop at the correct one. E.g. for 7x9 I'll go "9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63" and end up holding 7 fingers up. It works, but ...

So if you struggle with multiplication the method that might work is where you already know multiplication?

Gen x here (I think 🤣) why do they try make things we learned in school years ago harder by changing the ways we learned them, trying to do homework with me youngest is hard work, spend more time arguing with her over the ways to get the answers 🤦🏻 ( obviously my ways are the best ways )💚🇮🇪

I have a feeling people really like using something that seems novel and "easier" and not realizing that it's basically the same thing, just disguised a little bit

Thanks for this, I love you message at the end and agree totally. As a maths teacher I have always looked for alternative approaches.

I guess I don't understand the hate. I'm quite familiar with my times tables, but this new method is so fascinating and new to me that I found myself trying it out.

My son who’s 3 next month absolutely loves the show NumberJacks and Numberblocks. I wish they were around when I was his age. I’d be much better at maths then. I 100% agree with creative learning. Whatever way helps should be encouraged
