Back squats have been considered one of the most important exercises for building muscle and strength for decades. But Vince Gironda, the legendary Iron Guru, had a different opinion. He believed heavy back squats could develop the hips and glutes beyond what some bodybuilders wanted, potentially hurting the proportions they were trying to achieve. He even refused to have squat racks in his gym! Instead, he favored movements like hack squats, sissy squats, and leg extensions to emphasize thigh development. What I find interesting is how relevant this thought process is today: exercise selection has become increasingly individualized, with bodybuilders choosing movements according to their structure, goals, and the muscles they want to prioritize Gironda's specific beliefs weren't all scientifically established, but he was willing to question a convention and look for alternatives that served his goals. That’s the main point about my posts and this page: question things, try out new ideas, share thoughts and have valuable conversations to learn and evolve. How many exercises are we still doing simply because someone told us they were essential? Sources: 1. Heffernan, C. (2017). Vince Gironda on the Back Squat (1988). Physical Culture Study. 2.
