I’m posting this because this is the side of autism that people don’t see. I’m frustrated. I’m exhausted. And I’m tired of pretending this is easy. For 10+ years, my daughter has needed 24/7 supervision, even while she sleeps. Finding people who are willing and able to continue working with her because of her behaviors has become incredibly difficult. And somehow, everywhere we turn, it feels like we have to explain the same thing over and over again. Some police officers don’t understand autism. The courts and judges don’t always seem to understand the reality families like ours are living with. People see a few minutes of a situation and make assumptions without understanding the years behind it. Tonight, even something as simple as going out to dinner as a family turned into a report of a “man kidnapping a young girl,” with police responding and a helicopter in the sky. Meanwhile, I’m her father. I’m trying to keep my autistic daughter safe. There is no clocking out. There is no real break. There is no “we’ll deal with it tomorrow.” It is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I love my daughter more than words can explain. But love does not erase exhaustion. Love doesn’t magically create resources, trained caregivers, understanding police officers, supportive systems, or people willing to help. I’m tired. Families living with severe autism don’t need judgment. We don’t need another person telling us what we “should” be doing. We need understanding. We need empathy. We need trained support. And sometimes, we simply need someone to actually listen. #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #SevereAutism #AutismFamily #AutismDad
