@genericartdad: How much water does AI actually use? To be clear, I’m not discussing any of the moral or ethical or all around pros and cons of AI. I’m simply addressing the resource consumption stats that keep circulating about AI. These are average figures. We should all be aware of the consequences of our choices.
Wait you’re telling me that ai servers don’t use a closed recirculating system like every other water cooled computer on earth?

"is the water ruined?" yes, it's contaminated with heavy metals from the cooling system in Data centers. also they're using the most inefficient cooling system (water pump) because they're unclever and just copied what gamer PCs use.

And we need to tax AI. Tax corporations that use it, not the users. That tax gets spread out to water infrastructure upgrades, funding unemployment (ppl that are losing their jobs to AI), schools and more.

To anyone saying it’s easy to not use AI: This is only true for direct usage. Your data is constantly being fed into an AI which provides some sort of usage into it anyway, like Gemini providing an answer everytime you make a google search.

The truth concerning the water issue is there are other ways to cool servers that don’t involve using water but they’re more costly. So it’s cutting corners at the cost of important environmental resources.

I'm curious because Google automatically uses AI now whenever you search for stuff, it's still counts the same as using chatgpt right? I feel guilty just googling stuff now. there's literally no way to get away from it

I genuinely think AI should not have been commercially released to the public as it was. The sheer demand, accessibility and resources it uses makes it volatile. It should’ve been kept within the STEM field or at least used for more specialized tasks. This isn’t even taking into the fact that any massive technology that the public has access to the government already (probably) has the better version.

To sum up say you are a data center in the desert water has to be transported from outside the desert to cool computers. The water evaporates never to return where it was taken from. It also doesn’t return to the desert because clouds get swept away to fall back down to a different biome. So water dries up from location 1. Desert stays desert and location 3 receives record rain fall, flooding, and is also damaged.
