@goliathliftzz: The squat has been considered the king of leg training. But Ukrainian Olympic champion and coach Anatoly Bondarchuk believed the exercise had limitations. Instead of relying on squats, he experimented with heavy barbell step-ups to develop hip and leg power. One of the athletes associated with this style of training, Leonid Taranenko, went on to perform one of the most legendary lifts in weightlifting history — a 586 lb clean and jerk. His leg training reportedly included 396 lb step-ups for 3 reps per leg. Are squats truly the king of leg training or just the most popular? #strengthtraining #weightlifting #trainhardorgohome #sportscience #exercisephilosophy

Hey man! Good to see another post of yours, curious, there are many variations of step ups, to fully capture the benefits of a squat, should these step ups be set at a height to achieve desired depth? As in 2-3 ft block to simulate a 90ish degree depth or is it better to set a shorter block with a explosive/lockout focus? Also does sweeping the opposite knee to your chest make a difference versus only placing it down? Thanks man!

Guarantee doing a step up with 396 lbs puts more strain on the spine than it does with squat

The issue is that most people don't or can't squat low enough to hit the part of the quads around the knee. Pistol squats and step ups are great for that.

It doesn’t matter what exercise your doing if your still performing the main function of the muscle. Your body has no idea what exercise you’re doing it’s just activating muscle fibers over and over.
