Why dont they reduce the doctors full time contracts from 48h to 40h like in every other sector? Lots of new jobs could be created and less burnout in current staff

i don’t think people understand whats really going on. the NHS is taking away doctor roles to replace them with “cheaper” alternatives as doctors need to train, specialise and move on and upwards to progress where as certain roles like ACP and PA’s are roles that tend to stay for longer, the NHS isn’t concerned about having more specialised and well trained doctors in the long run, more about “whats the easier, most convenient thing now” & not realising the long term effect and damage of this. secondly they are also trying to have doctors do more than they need to, cover more hours, more wards, more tasks, more patients, something that should be done between 3 doctors, gets allocated to just 1 as its again.. “cheaper” to pay 1 doctor, over work them rather than the 3 needed. this is a serious health risk to the public because they’re now being dealt with burnt out and overworked doctors as well as expecting good quality work but it’s becoming hard. now they’re telling the new graduates that theres limited spaces to work, F1’s will work (they’re being overworked) and then F2’s too but only to end up… jobless? or in serious competition bc the NHS prefers to keep them stuck here and working for less pay & crazy hours. I had to a 18 hour shift as F2+ this one singular day, I am consistently doing 13-14h shifts. yes i can leave after 12h, but these are patients i care about and frankly.. i cant afford to do something half arsed for the sake of going home sooner and risking my entire career. its a big shit show. all our taxes and NI… where is it really going? this is not just a worry for doctors but the worry for those who reach out to the NHS, the patients, their families, the public health is being tested but people are failing to see the full pictures.

This is a complex issue. I’m a UK grad (now doctor, and therefore rather biased in this conversation), but I do think it’s only fair we prioritise our own graduates as almost all other countries do. The expansion in med school without expansion in med school places is clumsy and silly, and doesn’t address the problem we have. The truth is, we need more beds, more hospitals more doctors and hence more training in the NHS… it’s not right to continue as we are, as 10 years from now, without adequate numbers of consultants being trained, it’s only our patients who will suffer. Our patients deserve excellence, and they will never get it with successive governments thinking only 4 years ahead…

Also can you not call us junior doctors, as it unforutnately, makes the public assume we arent qualified. Instead call us resident Doctor. Any doctor who isn't a consultant was/is a junior doctor. However, due to media...they made it so it seems as if we have no experience.

Not just med students. Physios, nurses, OTs, pharmacists etc. too! I’m a physio and it took me 18 months to get a job in the NHS. Don’t listen to Wes Streeting though, this has nothing to do with fair wage increases, it’s due to underfunding and a slow privatisation of the NHS. Vote Green 💚

Sadly I’m a victim of this, I’m a doctor and looking for a job in the NHS, but there’s not enough jobs so I’ll have to throw my medical degree away and work as something else … I’m a Dutch national and have been a citizen of England since 2004.
