F1 fans judge Hamilton through a completely different lens than other drivers, and that’s where the bias starts. A “normal” career curve is gradual, drivers need time to reach the top. Lewis didn’t. He came in as a rookie, won races immediately, and fought for a title. In his second season, he became World Champion. That kind of entry level is almost unheard of. When people compare GOATs (in my opinion GOAT as the definition says „the greatest” - should be only one). Hamilton, Verstappen, Schumacher, Senna, they ignore context. Max is in his prime right now, still on the rise or peak, so naturally he looks unstoppable or. But comparing prime Verstappen to a 40+ Hamilton makes no sense. Even in 2021 was „old” for F1… Prime vs prime is the only fair comparison. Schumacher reached the top quickly too, but Lewis was still faster to impact. Senna was also that level of raw talent, but his career was cut at its absolute peak, which freezes his legacy in a “perfect moment”. What people also ignore is longevity. Most drivers have a few peak years. Lewis had a decade at the very top. Not 2–3 seasons, but sustained dominance. That gets normalized instead of appreciated. There’s also era bias. Senna drove much simpler cars, while modern F1 cars are insanely complex, basically spaceships full of systems and adjustments. Yet fans romanticize the past and downplay the modern challenge. And finally, expectations. Just like people expect a Lamine Yamal to be Messi instantly, fans expect 40 year-old Hamilton to perform like he’s 25 and judge every mistake harshly. That skews perception. Hamilton didn’t have “5 minutes” at the top, he had an era. I’m F1 fan so i never understood hating on any driver. I simply appreciate greatness, love max, love Lewis, love senna, love schumi. They fact they hate Lewis shows that he still matters, and that’s the most important.
