My mother is Tagalog, a people whose name is often traced to taga-ilog or "people of the river." She was born in the island of Mindoro. My father is Ilocano from La Union. Ilocano comes from i- (from) and looc (bay), meaning "people of the bay." They are only two threads in a tapestry of more than 180 ethnolinguistic groups spread across the Philippine archipelago. Today marks 128 years since the declaration of Philippine independence. Filipinos have always had a close relationship with water. Rivers. Bays. Seas. Monsoon rains. Every day, I miss it. I think about how most of the water I see in Canada spends months frozen and white. I miss tropical rain that refreshes instead of warns. The more I unearth layers of our precolonial heritage, the more grateful I become. Grateful that I grew up waking to the sound of family in the kitchen and the smell of garlic fried rice. Grateful that I can speak Tagalog. Grateful for the folklore I grew up listening to, the traditions that shaped me, and the tight-knit communities that survived centuries of change. Today, I'm also grateful to wear a handwoven skirt, shawl, and handmade earrings from Dekada Asia, created in partnership with Indigenous artisans from the Cordillera. These pieces were woven and crafted by hand, carrying generations of skill, artistry, and cultural memory. Happy Independence Day, Philippines. Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan. 🇵🇭 #filipino #philippines #philippineindependenceday
