✨ PT Tip: Post-Mastectomy Scar Tissue Massage Scar tissue massage (STM) is one technique that may help improve scar mobility, reduce post-surgical discomfort, and support upper-body movement as the scar heals. 🩷 Before you start: Make sure your incision is fully healed and you’ve been cleared by your surgeon or healthcare provider for scar mobilization. What you’ll need: * Clean hands * A small amount of unscented lotion, plain oil, or silicone scar gel to help your fingers glide * A comfortable, quiet place where you can relax for a few minutes How to massage the scar: * Place the pads of 1–2 fingers gently on and around the scar. * Apply enough pressure to move the skin, but not enough to cause pain or prolonged redness. * Start with small circles over and around the scar. * Then gently move the skin/scar up and down and side to side. * Try for about 5–10 minutes, once or twice a day, as tolerated. Scar mobilization may be continued for several weeks to months as the scar matures. 🎯 The goal: help improve tissue mobility, reduce adhesions, and support normal scar remodeling. ⚠️ Important precautions: * Screen for signs of lymphedema, including swelling, redness, warmth, tightness, or heaviness. If present, avoid treating the affected limb and refer for appropriate evaluation. * Do not massage over open wounds, active infections, unhealed incisions, or areas of skin breakdown. * Consider bleeding risk and medical history before using deeper pressure. * Do not massage directly over known tumor tissue. Educational content only — not a substitute for an individualized evaluation. #MastectomyRecovery #womenshealth #PhysicalTherapy #recoveryjourney #mastectomy
