@drdomeofficial: There’s growing research showing a connection between gum disease and brain health. One bacterium that keeps appearing in these studies is Porphyromonas gingivalis, a key pathogen involved in chronic periodontitis. When gums are inflamed or bleeding, bacteria can enter the bloodstream. From there, they don’t just stay in the mouth. They can travel through the body and trigger inflammatory responses elsewhere. Researchers have found that toxins produced by PG, called gingipains, are associated with the same types of amyloid plaques seen in Alzheimer’s disease. This doesn’t mean gum disease causes Alzheimer’s on its own. But it does highlight something important: The mouth is not separate from the brain. Chronic oral inflammation can influence systemic inflammation, immune activity, and potentially even neuroinflammation. Oral health isn’t just about teeth and gums. It may be one of the foundations of long-term brain health. Cheers, Dr. Dome
