those first 2 things are spring loaded switches. light switches aren't on a spring to turn them off 🤣 and the lamp isn't really even down. it is turning "on" towards the light. room light is up so switch goes up moving the electricity toward the light. same with that lamp "down" is toward the light being turned on.

here in germany, a switch is generally off in the up position, and on in the down position. however this isnt a set in stone rule so you will sometimes come across a "reversed" switch.

Down is on. Comes from the use of rocker switches as opposed to knife switches. Knife switches are “Up is on” because if they’re loose you want it to fall away from being connected not towards. Rocker switches are the opposite as the mechanism pushes the rocker bar up when the switch is down and vice versa.

The kettle and toaster are down because it has to engage a spring loaded latch so it can release when it's ready. In the United States, Canada, and many other countries, the standard convention is that up is "on" and down is "off" for toggle and paddle light switches. This aligns with safety practices where gravity pulls switches down into the "off" position. Conversely, in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, the standard is usually down for "on".
