@drsermedmezher: POV: Your Child Has Dark Circles. Sources- PMID 33911473 teonaab on TT Seeing dark circles under a child's eyes can easily trigger parental worry, but these shadows are incredibly common and usually harmless because the skin under the eye is the thinnest on the entire body. Often, the simplest explanation is genetics; if a parent has natural periorbital hyperpigmentation or prominent capillary beds, the child likely inherited the trait. Another primary cause is simple fatigue. When a child lacks quality sleep, their body produces excess cortisol to stay alert, which causes blood vessels to dilate. Because the under-eye skin is so delicate, these temporarily swollen vessels show through prominently as a dark, bluish-purple tint. Additionally, dark circles can appear as structural shadows caused by mild dehydration. When children forget to drink enough water, their skin loses its plumpness, causing the tissue around the eyes to recede and appear hollow. Less commonly, these shadows can indicate a nutritional issue like iron-deficiency anemia. Low iron levels lead to poorly oxygenated blood and a generally pale complexion, creating a sharp visual contrast that makes the naturally dark blood vessels stand out. While lifelong dark circles are rarely a concern, suddenly appearing shadows accompanied by extreme lethargy, paleness, or irritability warrant a visit to a pediatrician to rule out an underlying issue. #parenting #skin #darkcircles
