As a Civil Engineering graduate, I disagree with your opinion. Firstly salary is very varied, if you go into into contracting, oil/gas and many other industries you can make a lot more than 70 starting out. Secondly civil engineering is probably the most versatile engineering degree for maybe besides mechanical. Civil has a lot of sub specialties and I know many civils who transitioned into like software engineering for example. At the end of the day it’s still an engineering degree, all it teaches you is the ability to teach yourself. Everything else is learned on the job site. Also you forgot to mention civil engineering also has the highest job security. It Deff doesn’t have the highest salary but enough to be comfortable.

I am a civil and have done 2 internships in oil and gas. The idea that you are stuck in any sector as an engineer is something I really don’t believe in. I have seen people 180 sectors regardless of their specification, which is what i see the benefit of being an engineer as.

Civil here. A disproportionate number of us work in government jobs (federal, state, and municipal) which generally offer lower salaries, but often make up for it with benefits, job security, retirement, etc. Also, many civil jobs are in rural areas, where the cost of living is lower. Mechanical and electrical engineers enjoy better opportunities in high-paying industries like defense/aerospace and oil & gas.

Umm, there are a lot of CEs in Oil & Gas. Somebody has to design the rigs. . I'm at a top 20 US firm. We start CEs and MEs at $80k start. . After a couple decades, salaries can get very high if you're into management, low to mid 200s if you don't. That's not too shabby in the grand scheme.

I work for a public wastewater utility in California and civil engineering pay scale at my district starts around $128k for entry-level and a senior engineer tops out around $220k. Engineering dept manager above that.
