@ohkaytacos: We recently rescued a miniature horse mare with dwarfism. Miniature horse dwarfism is a genetic condition—most often from recessive mutations (like ACAN gene variants)—that disrupt normal bone and cartilage development. Affected foals can have disproportionately short limbs, large or domed heads, underbites, joint deformities, and may suffer from pain, mobility issues, and organ complications. Responsible breeding uses genetic testing to avoid pairing carriers, since two carriers can produce dwarf foals. Our little mini was exposed to dangerous viral pathogens in the auction circuit but the real danger was revealed once she was home. She might be pregnant! A pregnant dwarf miniature horse is high-risk because their small, deformed pelvis often can’t safely pass a foal, leading to life-threatening dystocia. Their compromised body structure and possible organ issues make pregnancy harder to carry and increase the chance of complications or death for both mare and foal. There’s also a strong genetic risk of producing another dwarf foal, especially if bred to a carrier. We are taking her to a specialized hospital exam to see if she is or isn’t pregnant.
