back when I used to run track in HS, one of the things they taught us was to relax every other part of our body to reserve energy and neural drive for running. so when you strain your face and all those muscles tighten up, it's consuming some small part of the total signal your brain can send out. it would therefore make sense to learn to control those facial muscles so you can put 100% of your effort into the lift.
