i’m embarrassed of these comments. going straight up really fast and reaching great heights is NOT what gets a rocket into space. gravity just pulls you back down. for anything to escape gravitational pull, you have to get above the atmosphere at a sideways velocity. for earth it’s at least 17,500mph (7.8km). orbit basically means falling. around a planet or body at the same EXACT horizontal speed as its gravity, curving downward so it doesn’t fall back down. earth’s gravity pulls the spacecraft down, BUT it’s going sideways so it keeps missing earth (falling), hence being in orbit. air resistance is higher near the ground (drag), so it has to start curving when it gains altitude and less air pushes against it. science is really cool
