I had a resident that told me her daughter was coming to get her. She was always so excited. (The daughter had passed) I told her there was a rain storm coming and she had to wait till it passed before coming. To get some rest until she came. She always asked at night. She always fell asleep knowing her daughter was coming- she was just waiting on the storm to pass. ❤️

I worked in a nursing home in my teens. One lady would get upset asking for her mum. We told her she was upstairs having a nap and she’d tell us off if we woke her up. She laughed and agreed and was happy and soon forgot about her mum. It was so much kinder than the alternative if someone told her she’d died and she would be devastated with grief.

I used to tell my grandma I was showing her my house and get “sad” she didn’t like it. She’d start to be really nice about “my cute little house” 😅

My father suddenly didn't recognize me and demanded I leave. I started out of the room when the nurse said, "Oh, have you met my new assistant? Do you mind if she stays to help me?" He was fine with that. Ten minutes uses later he recognized me again.

Think of it like an improv session. When done right it can actually bring a lot of peace.

I visited my Gran and there was an old lady there crying for her Mum. The carer kept telling her that her Mum was dead. It broke my heart to see her relive this pain over and over again. Why not tell her that she's popped to the shops to buy her something nice for tea!?!? We should live in their world and not expect them to be in ours.

I had this lovely 96 year old lady telling me her mum would be worried and she needed to get home. I told her we were having a girls sleepover, and that her mum knows where she is and we’d contact her mum tomorrow, which seemed to settle her

I used to tell my dad that we were at a hotel and I paid a lot of money for this vacation and we would go home after. Worked like a charm.

I always tell them “ well i took you home but you keep coming back”🤣 99% of the time the response is “ really???” Then I respond with “ you really like the snacks here now let’s go get you some donuts.”

My dad, a retired firefighter, pulled the alarm twice at the nursing home cause he had to go to work and no one would take him. The firemen were so patient and would sit and talk to him. It truly broke my heart to hear this.

My gran used to want to go home and she would somehow call a taxi. The taxi driver knew her and he would take her around the block a few times and bring her home again. She would go back in the house quite happy.

I totally agree that you have to meet them where their reality is; correcting them does no good at all. When I had to move my mom into assisted living, I recreated her living room and bedroom from home as best I could. I think having familiar things in the same spot helped her.

I had a client with dementia and when she wanted to go home I'd take her to walk outdoors around the bloxk and alas she was home! Another one I'd take for a drive and return content, for 27 years I had to be creative. I've retired and at times I think of them how sad dementia can rob beautiful minds.

We had a patient that would get ready every morning and at the same time each day start talking about how she wanted to go home. Whenever I passed her in the halls I would tell her I called her taxi and it was on its way but traffic was bad. She always settled down knowing we were listening to her needs.

I had a resident who’s daughter had passed away while the resident was in our facility. They told her the first day but we decided it was best to not continue to tell her. However, even though she didnt know why, she would cry constantly. When we would comfort her, she would tell us she didnt know why she felt the way she did. The love of a mother truly defies all rules

I'm a transman 🏳️‍⚧️so it's really understandable when my grandma doesn't always recognize me, even if I transitioned 6 years ago. She'll think I'm my dad, my brothers, my uncle & I just roll with it. Sometimes she recognizes me & calls me by my birth name. And personally that's okay too because no matter who she thinks I am, she always responds with love. When she does recognize me & remembers my name she will always say "My handsome boy, you're here" gives me a hug & tells me I have a beautiful family.🥰

I worked 3rd shift in a nursing facility and there was always a woman who was in a panic because her husband was supposed to come pick her up and she thought he was in a terrible accident and she just had to leave to get to him. Almost every night. I always told her “I’m so sorry, I got busy and forgot to tell you he’s stuck at work and said you can just sleep here tonight and we can have a girls night! I have extra pajamas for you and an extra bed you can sleep in and he’ll be here in the morning!” Always instantly calmed her down and we’d turn on a movie in the main area and have a late night snack. Absolutely adored her.

the best tip i received during my caretaking of my grandmother during her stages of alzheimers/dementia was "always say yes"... you play along, you improvise.
