@sacramentourbanmedia916: A 12-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a fellow student who suffered a fatal head injury after being struck with a metal water bottle during what authorities describe as a bullying-related incident at a Los Angeles school. According to Los Angeles police, the juvenile suspect—whose age and gender have not been disclosed—was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder. The arrest follows the death of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa, who died on Feb. 25. Officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Friday that the case remains under review as investigators determine whether charges will be filed. Police Officer Charles Miller said additional details cannot be released due to the ages of those involved. However, the victim’s family alleges that Khimberly was attacked on Feb. 17 while trying to defend her older sister, Sharon Zavaleta, who they say had been the target of ongoing bullying at Reseda Charter High School, which serves both middle and high school students. Family attorney Robert Glassman said the arrest marks progress but does not resolve broader concerns. “Accountability involves more than an arrest,” he said, emphasizing the need to examine how the situation escalated without earlier intervention. According to a wrongful-death claim filed last month against the Los Angeles Unified School District, Khimberly was struck in the head in a school hallway. She was initially treated and released from Valley Presbyterian Hospital the same day. Days later, her condition worsened, and she was admitted to UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, where she underwent emergency brain surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma. She died shortly afterward. The family contends that both sisters had endured months of harassment and physical aggression, which they say had been reported to school officials without effective action being taken. Glassman said the family is focused on seeking accountability from the school district and has not ruled out potential legal action against the hospital that first treated Khimberly. A spokesperson for LAUSD declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation. In a separate incident last month, a 12-year-old girl in Georgia, identified as Jada West, died after collapsing days following a physical altercation near her neighborhood school bus stop, according to local authorities.#fyp #viral
