@wordswithbones: Here’s why Korean food is sweet, and who to blame. Also, one critic’s very weird and kind of imperialist take on sweetness in food (?) #koreanfood #wellnesstok #paikjongwon #koreanrecipe #seoulfood
I live in South Korea. At a big chain grocery store recently, I bought what I thought were standard cherry tomatoes. Got them home, ate one, instantly spit it out. Looked at the label and they were stevia infused tomatoes. wtf?!!! 😭

I heard that people say Korean food in America is more similar to older taste of Korean food because they don't add a lot of sugar, is this true?

Yeah I was so into Korean food and culture while I was in college so I started to learn how to make korean food. I realized after awhile they put sugar in literally everything sweet or savory. Even if dont taste it, it still has sugar in it. Basically korean food is red pepper paste, red pepper flakes, sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil mix in different ratio into different dishes. Sometimes there are other spices but those 5 r always the base

I once ordered a side of fries at a restaurant on Jeju island. Nothing on the menu suggested it came with anything but when they arrived, they were drizzled with an ungodly amount of honey, and parmesan cheese.

The food is sweet but the super famous pastries can be so bland and that’s what baffles me

one of my Korean professors never used sugar directly for her recipes but rather fruits, honey, and occasionally sprite. But it emphasized that there's ways to have alternatives to just plain sugar for recipes.

I literally had a rosé pasta in Korea that I expected to be spicy and savory but it was sooooo sweet. Then the vanilla crepe cake I got afterward was just like plain crepes and the whipped cream between the layers tasted like they whipped a carton of heavy cream, didn’t add anything to it, and spread it. Not the balance I was looking for lol
