My girlfriend and I watched this short film, and she cried nonstop—not because of the gasoline prices, but because it reminded her of her father. She once asked him to attend her graduation because he had never attended any of her graduations, from daycare to high school. Now that we are in college, he had promised to attend her graduation together with the family. Sadly, her father passed away last year. Just like in the video, where the son asked for rubber shoes but never received them because his father died, her story feels the same. That’s why we should never make promises we can’t keep.

After watching Gasolina, I realized something I’ve been trying to ignore for so long. I realized that the reason I feel jealous when I see others with their fathers is because I know what I didn’t have. My father has not just one, but two other families. And while others have fathers who work hard and provide, mine didn’t even spend a cent on our tuition—my mother carried that responsibility for me and my siblings. I’m not jealous of money—I’m jealous of effort, of presence, of a father who chooses to stay, to care, and to be there. It hurts to accept that someone who was supposed to love us fully chose not to show up. But this realization opened my eyes. Now I understand the kind of love I deserved, and someday, I’ll be the kind of person who never makes others feel the way I did.

ayoko tanungin si Papa kung kumusta na siya, kung napapagod na ba siya sa araw² na pag tra-trabaho. Dahil ayaw kong makita siyang umiyak, dahil siya ang rason kung bakit, kahit bata pa ako ay gusto konang my maabot ako at sa ganoon paraan, Hindi Kona siya makikitang nag tra-trabaho sa araw². I stop my college days just to help my Papa and Mama, because seeing them getting old and still doing hard work, make me feel I'm useless Son. they didn't made me pressure, but me! seeing them, made me a lot of pressure. Pa/Ma! wak po kayong mag alala handa akong baguhin ang direksyon ko sa buhay ko, sa kagustuhan kong mabigyan kayo ng magandang buhay at para narin hindi na po kayo mag tra-trabaho sa araw².
