@hitch_philippines: The fall of Corregidor on May 6, 1942, marked the final collapse of organized Allied resistance in the Philippines during the early stages of World War II. Following the surrender of Bataan in April, "The Rock" became the last bastion for American and Filipino forces, who endured 27 days of relentless Japanese artillery and aerial bombardment. As food, water, and ammunition depleted, thousands of soldiers and civilians sought refuge within the Malinta Tunnel. On the night of May 5, Japanese forces launched a fierce amphibious assault, landing tanks and infantry on the island’s eastern shores. To prevent a massacre of the over 1,000 wounded personnel inside the tunnels, Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright surrendered the garrison, leading to the capture of approximately 11,000 personnel and giving the Japanese Imperial Army full control over Manila Bay. #FallOfCorregidor #CorregidorIsland #WWIIHistory #PacificWar #PhilippineHistory
