I read and use an audiobook at the same time. I’m a slow ass reader so I have mine set to 1.4x unless it’s an intense speed and I change it to 1.5x 😭

Also, people READ at different speeds. Are we suggesting that everyone should move their eyes at the exact same speed because one reading tempo is superior? No, of course not. So WHY should we listen at the same speed!

I’ll admit.. I’m a 1x girly 🤣 idk how yall are paying attention when they talk so fast. The difference is that I don’t doubt that YOU can do it, I just assume I can’t. Like I’m not the main character, plenty of people are capable of things I cannot do.. so it’s feasible to me that you’re able to.

I physically read way faster than I listen, it's actually a slow down more than a boon but the pro to it is I can multitask with listening so I can get through what I want to even with responsibilities

I’m a librarian and avid audiobook listener. I keep this paper on my phone to show people who want to argue- ‘The Representation of Semantic Information Across Human Cerebral Cortex During Listening Versus Reading Is Invariant to Stimulus Modality’. It was in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2019

along these lines— one time I saw a person argue that content creators make them feel like they’re falling behind (which weird but ok!) because they can’t do audiobooks & insinuated that it’s not fair because audiobooks are faster than physical reading, which heavy disagree! I read physical way faster than audio?

I default to 1.85 for exactly the same reason, but that's still SO much slower than I can read with my eyeballs! I've tried immersive reading but it didn't work out well. Libby goes up to 3x, and I was constantly catching myself reading ahead of the audio and needing to wait for it to catch up 😅 I can read more audiobooks because I can do other things at the same time, like stir the pasta or take a bus without getting motion sick, but it takes approximately twice as much time to finish as it would if I was reading with my eyeballs instead.

They read slowly to avoid mistakes. They get paid for a completed product, not time spent making it. I’d argue audiobooks are MEANT to be sped up at least a bit. Also I read fast too so like 🤷🏻♀️
