@brittanyalaine: 👇Things that surprised me about Easter in Germany as an American 🇩🇪🐣 • People take the whole week off. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, and many people take vacation days around them — so a lot of offices are basically quiet the entire week. • Osterfeuer (Easter bonfires). Entire villages gather around huge bonfires the night before Easter. Food stands, drinks, neighbors chatting — it feels more like a community festival. • Eggs hanging on trees. People decorate branches and garden trees with colorful eggs (Osterstrauch). It’s basically the Easter version of a Christmas tree. • Hand-painted eggs are everywhere. A lot of people hollow out real eggs by poking a hole and blowing the inside out, then hand-paint them to hang on trees or decorate the house. You see these far more than the plastic eggs used for egg hunts in the U.S. • Things actually close. Many shops are closed over the holiday weekend, which feels very different from the U.S. where holidays often mean big sales. • Village traditions. Especially in the countryside, Easter often feels like a community event with local gatherings and traditions. Things Germans think are totally normal that surprised me the first time I experienced Easter here.
