The binoculars would not have helped On a moonless night, the ocean is pitch black. Binoculars would have severely restricted the lookouts' field of vision and just shown them "more blackness Lookouts relied on their naked eyes to search the horizon for the dark silhouette of an iceberg. Using binoculars to confirm what they were seeing would have actually cost them precious seconds.
