@bankslibrary: The Art vs. The Business There’s a difference between the art of acting… and the business of acting.” In this 1990 conversation, Tony Randall breaks down a truth that still echoes today: talent alone isn’t always enough. The craft of acting, study, discipline, emotional depth, is one world. The industry, casting, connections, timing, and luck, is another entirely. Many gifted actors dedicate their lives to mastering the art, yet never receive the opportunity they deserve. Meanwhile, others may find success through circumstance, exposure, or timing. Randall reminds us that recognition isn’t always a reflection of ability, it’s often a reflection of access. His words pull back the curtain on a reality rarely discussed. I’m old enough to remember Hans Conried’s voice as that of the cartoon character Snidely Whiplash.

We don’t really like to believe this. That chance and dumb luck play such a large role in our fortunes.

It applies to business as well - I got breaks in business that many didn’t get. I made some of my breaks with hard work but I was definitely fortunate and that contributed massively to my success. I wish more successful ppl would admit that good fortune was critical

Tony was luckier and a little more, what, strategic? Certainly brilliantly talented but also as canny as needed….

Interesting how everyone saw what a genius this man was, but the people close to him who made it couldn’t help him. What a shame.
