To me, total portfolio value is much more significant of a number than "premium in". As an example – if you brought in $100K in premiums by lost $125K in portfolio value then the premium was meaningless. This is not criticism. I always go on liquidation value when referring to my returns. What is my portfolio worth if I sell everything in the present moment?

Buy a Put as insurance policy. Typically I will do 120 days on those and I sell weekly Puts on that same stock. It takes a good amount of risk out but it does cost you some money upfront.

well also if you have some extra capital or if you still do it secure puts you can grab that premium and average down on the ones that you're back holder

Yes. I got hit with Oracle on that. Should have rolled for a couple of grand. I did learn though and rolled ARM fans saved myself.

I prefer cash secured puts to cover calls in a down market. I could roll it lower on puts but with cover calls I there is nothing I could do but watch the market crash.
