He was a smart, hard-working patriot who volunteered early on with his older brother to try to help their country. He pursued a woman older than him whom he genuinely respected for her character and shared values. He was a devout husband and father his whole life, maintaining a close relationship with her. His older brother died in the war, and Joachim had a panic attack from what he saw at the front. When the trial was used to try to embarrass the German people, he took full responsibility for all actions of his subordinates, including the ones against his orders. His wife wrote in a letter to their children that living with him during those final years were some of their most cherished times together before he sent her away for her safety when communist threats became too great. His son became a lawyer in New York.
